Buying Marked-Downs
Finding the unadvertised-markdown is one of my favorites deals to get at Kroger. Kroger often marks down items that are end of the season or getting ready to expire and puts them on a special table, mine is located in the freezer section. I have grabbed lots of deals on toiletries and air fresheners this way. But I really like to find mark downs in the bread, produce and meat sections. And, when you can pair them with a coupon, it makes an even better deal!
I often come right home and toss my bread and meat mark downs directly in the freezer, unless I know we are going to eat them that day. I have even done this with fruit such as berries and apples (peeled and cut first).
Some days I go to Kroger and find zero marked down deals. But today was a great day to find unadvertised deals at my Kroger! Because you never know when you might find these unexpected deals its always a good rule to bring your whole coupon organizer not just the coupons you know you’re going to use.
6 Hormel Turkey Pepperoni marked at .79 each for a total of 4.74
3 Crab Classics Imitation Crab at 1.99 – 3 1.00 off coupons from smartsource.com for a total of 2.97
1 Activa yogurt at 1.29 – 1.00 coupon from newspaper insert for a total of .29
1 Gold Medal Flour on unadvertised sale for 1.77 – .75 printable for a total of 1.02
4 3 lb. bags of apples marked down to .99 for a total of 3.96
Total 12.98 plus tax
If you’re wondering how these last minute finds fit into my budget you can read a good article on stockpiling here.
I also practice the art of substituting when I find good deals like this. For example I was looking for turkey when I found the amazing deal on our favorite pepperoni. So now my husband and son will be taking pepperoni sandwiches on their upcoming outdoor event instead of turkey sandwiches- for the price of 2 packages of turkey I got 6 packages of pepperoni. I was going to pick up a box of Gorton’s fillets since they have been on sale for the Lenten season but decided instead to make some crab cakes with some of my crab. I also try to allow a little extra grocery money for great deals like these, but if I can’t, sometimes I just have to pass them up!
