Art and Estrangement

Here’s an interesting quote about art from an moderately interesting review of a book by a guy named White: Drawing on the Russian Formalism of the 1920s, White maintains that “greatness” in art depends on “estrangement,” a perception from unfamiliar vantages that then tells us something “truer and more complete” about the world. And to [...]

Existentialism in Literature and Film at Berkely

Check this out: a podcasted lecture series from Berkely on Existentialism in literature and film. From Berkely of all places. Listen to the description: The course will be organized around various attempts to reinterpret the Judeo/Christian God, and to determine in what sense, if at all, such a God is still a living God. We [...]

Great Comments

This comment by Jonathan about Christian music is why I love having him as a reader. My favorite line: “I found the testimony, of moral conscience winning over in “illegal” downloading, in the 1st article to be especially nauseating.” That’s aweswome.

Update on NPR podcasts

As it turns out, you have to do a bit searching to find all the podcast stuff you’ll want. And Prairie Home Companion in its entirety is right out due to special guests, copyright, blah blah blah. Some of it IS streaming audio, too. Lame. Although, it looks like there’s ways to record streaming audio [...]

Emergent Village Podcasts on Philosophy

If you’re interested in philosophy at all, you should really check out the most recent three podcasts from Emergent Village. I guess at their last event, they had Jack Caputo and Richard Kearney, who are two big name philosphers who are also doing work with postmodernism and religion. And are Christians. So these guys are [...]

NPR Podcasts

There’s one good thing about New York: their NPR podcast page. Wow–all the good stuff on NPR? It’s all available for download here: Fresh Air, Prairie Home Companion, NYC Radio Lab (recommended by John). And this is real audio, not the streaming nonsense like on the NPR site.

A Song to Change Your Life

This song will change your life. It’s a Boy Scout song equal to ‘Be Prepared.’ At least.

Christianity Today on Digital Music

I just read a three part serious by Christianity Today on digital music. It was disappointing at best for several reasons: 1. it only dealt w/ Christian music, an not particularly intelligently, in a rather bland, Christian-radio sort of way.2. they talked about Napster and reference the GMA: “the Gospel Music Association has attempted to build [...]

Cool and Christianity

Today, I read an article about Christianity and being cool. Here’s a couple excerpts: [T]he majority of Christian hipsterdom is self-consciously so. This includes people who believe that in order to make a difference or be significant in culture, one must have wicked style.…Bridled cool is an economic cashcow. Translated to Christianity, cool is the [...]

Camping

Jonah and I went camping last weekend. It was dang cold for September. But it was awesome. Somebody in our church (still not sure who) has about 5 acres of woods with actual hills (and steep ones!) This, my friends, is how breakfast should be eaten: with family. On the ground.
